Ladies and Gents give it up to some of the worst fathers from the tv shows I watch!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heres to their poor children who raised each other, were mostly neglected or were raised by other people because their fathers couldn’t do their job and their mothers are dead/absent/not doing enough

Saudade: "I Never Sang for My Father"
Tumblr media
"Nothing good ever happens to Shawn Hunter" was so ingrained in him he often felt that someone had written his life story in such a way as to doom him to a never-ending cycle of misery.
The reality was somewhere in his life when he was very young, someone had put this idea into his head. The memory was vague, but he remembered a teacher had spoken these words over him. It was perhaps not those exact words and was more like "nothing good has happened to Shawn Hunter" or "nothing good will happen to Shawn Hunter" that was actually said. Whatever the original phrase was, it stuck in his head as "nothing good ever happens to Shawn Hunter".
And it was so apart of his core that he was undeserving of good things happening to him that he lived it out for over 30 years. In those moments when something good did happen to him, he was unable to accept it and, in most cases, actively rejected it.
Just like he'd rejected Jon for so long.
The ultimate good.
Shawn sighed and let his chin drop to his chest. When he looked up again, Chet Hunter stood in front of him, looking very much alive.
He froze in shock.
He hadn't seen Chet since he'd been home.
His biological father leaned lazily against the couch. His plaid shirt unbuttoned down to the fourth button so that his white beer-stained t-shirt showed. These shirts were tucked into faded blue jeans.
Chet stared at him with glassy eyes.
"So now you know what happened to Teach," he said in a gruff, almost accusatory tone.
Shawn narrowed his eyes at the apparition. "Yeah, I do."
The corner of Chet's mouth twitched. "You happy now?"
"Gettin' there."
Chet stared at him impassively. "Tell me, Shawnie, is Mr. Perfect, Joe Cool, everything you imagined him to be?"
Shawn didn't know how to respond.
When Chet showed up post-death, he was always humble and contrite with a wisdom and grace he did not have in life.
The snippy, critical bite to his words now threw him off.
When he didn't answer, Chet threw up his hands. "You wish he'd been your dad instead of me don'tcha?" He swore at Shawn. "I did the best I could for you, Shawnie! I had my own problems. You weren't the only one who never had nothing good happen to him. You think life was easy for me? It wasn't! I did all I could do. Couldn't do nothing else."
This is what Chet was like when he was alive, making every situation about him and never taking responsibility for anything he did. Shawn's eyes narrowed as the old familiar feelings of anger, resentment, hurt, and fear rose up in him.
"Yes, you could've," he snapped back.
Chet's glared at him. "How?"
"You could've come back and talked to me, told me the truth- that you were happier without a wife and kid. Happier with the alcohol than with me. Then you could've left me with someone who cared about me!"
Chet swore again and turned away. When he looked back, his eyes were red-rimmed and angry. "You adored him! He could give you things I couldn't. I could never compete with Teach. But you were my kid! I deserved the adoration you gave him."
Shawn paused and reminded himself that this was not the real Chet. However, that fact made this encounter even more confusing as he was no longer in control of it.
Chet was going off script.
Way off script.
And it pulled his thoughts past Katherine and losing Audrey to losing Jon. Those feelings that had been dredged up from the depths of him exploded through the surface.
"Then why did you agree to let them adopt me and then come back and say no?! Why did you let me go to New York to get Mom and then lie to me about Dad and that nurse?!"
His words hit Chet and instantly drained all color from him. He withered into a sick old man. "You callin' him Dad now? You gave him my name?" His voice was weak and trembling. "That's why, Shawnie. Without the stories I had nothin'. You loved him more. Stories were all I had to keep you with me."

ABOUT:
Chet Hunter was Shawn and Jack's father.
Joshua "Josh" Gabriel Matthews is the third son of Alan and Amy Matthews. He was born with complications and after a lot of touch and go, baby Josh recovers and goes home with his parents. He's aged up in the series finale (played by Daniel Jacobs, son of executive producer Michael) and gets some knowledge imparted onto him by his older brother, Cory.

Re-watching BMW again, and I'm back at the episode where Chet comes back after like a year (surely by accident), and I always get pissed off.
Turner was a good guardian, and frankly, given Chet's running off after his wife rather than be there for Shawn in the first place, Turner is the better place for him. Turner actually cares about him, and goes through so much for someone in his mid-twenties suddenly in charge of a teenager.
Shawn should've stayed with him.
Especially when you consider that Chet then goes on to kick Shawn out to live with his brother (WHAT EVEN?) and then, skips town rather than be there for EITHER of the boys and then, dies.
Like WTF. Verna isn't any better, but like WHY put Shawn back with Chet? He's clearly not father material.

Three episodes in and season 4 is definitely eleventh grade, Cory’s already said that. I read on Reddit that season 5 is the ‘senior year’ season.
I get my years from Girl Meets World—Joshua is born on Valentine’s Day 1998. The kids are in their first year of college. I can work backwards from there.
Sixth — 1990-1991
Seventh — 1991-1992
Eighth — 1992-1993
Ninth — 1993-1994
Tenth — 1994-1995
Eleventh — 1995-1996
Twelfth — 1996-1997
College 1 — 1997-1998
Eleventh grade is Eric’s gap year. That means tenth is his senior year, so ninth was his junior year, so eighth was his sophomore year, so seventh was freshman year, so sixth was his eighth—but sixth was his sophomore year.
My math was off before. I had two solutions: Eric being held back, and making sixth grade his freshman year instead. Now I would have to mix them. I hate everything 😔
Here is my now solution: season 1 is sixth grade; season 2 is seventh grade; season three is tenth grade; season four is eleventh.
So there’s just a huge time gap I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The end of season 2 is when Chet leaves so I guess the time skip is before then. Either that or Chet was gone for three years. Except they say multiple times he was just gone for a year.
Anyway Alan is 42 in eleventh so he was born in 1953.
Morgan is in third grade in season 3. Her school life is never mentioned before that. That’s either ninth or tenth, depending on my mood.
Hi I’m CeceNyss and I’m obsessed with timelines. Moving on-
Season 1 of boy meets world is 6th grade, and they’re eleven. This is mentioned multiple times, very explicitly. Cory turns 12 towards the end-ish. Shawn is said to be thirteen towards the end-ish too, take that for what you will, I can’t be bothered to care.
Season 2 is the next year of school, seventh grade, and their first year of high school. This is also said rather explicitly throughout the season—I’ve only watched it once, in the last like two days, but I’m fairly certain they mention it less towards the end, so. Season two could be argued to also include eighth grade, but they do bring up it having been one school year when Topanga is doing the yearbook interviews, so I can’t say.
Season 3 is where things get fuzzy. They don’t say what grade they’re in (I’m like six episodes in don’t quote me on that) BUT Shawn says “three years and I still never have any idea what he says” or something of the sort about Feeny. That is not the quote and I do not care my point is made. Now, this could be taken to mean two things—it’s the beginning of eighth grade, this is their third year with him; or it’s the beginning of ninth grade, they’ve already had three years with him.
I personally believe that eighth grade happens between season two and three. It makes the most sense to me, both with how Cory’s voice drops between seasons and with Shawn’s quote.
The biggest conflict with this is that Eric is a sophomore in season 1, a junior in season 2, and a senior in season 3. That would mean it has to just go sixth grade, seventh grade, eighth.
…buuuuuut Eric could have been held back. It’s not the most unbelievable thing in the world. It doesn’t even really rank. (His hair also changes drastically for the worse.)
Anyway I have no idea for after that I haven’t finished that episode where Topanga’s sick and girls are fawning over Cory for some reason. I’ll reblog with more when I’m further in for all my loyal fans I mean for Cal he’s the only one reading this

omg i remember that episode but i completely forgot that they have hunter lineage! maybe when jack still lived with chet, he’d occasionally tell him stories of their hunter lineage, which jack would always think were crazy talk, even as a little kid. and perhaps, like in the flashback episode, s15e16 i think, a case actually starts happening in the motel, or in the area, maybe at pennbrook! pennbrook would be a good way to pull jack to the forefront of the story more too. this all makes jack start to think back on the stories chet told him, he continues to push it away as craziness and a coincidence, but the evidence starts to pile up. jack sees something and dean walks in moments after it disappears and he finds himself telling dean everything.
also, going back to jeric a little, jack and dean could be an interesting dynamic to explore in that i think the both of them have repressed their sexualities and squashed them down deep, especially dean at this age.
plus, i think dean and sam & jack and shawn have a lot of similarities as brothers, especially with their difficulties with their fathers and their shifting relationships towards them. so it would be interesting to see dean and jack talk about their dads, like sam and shawn would as i mentioned originally. a key difference, particularly at this point in all of the characters’ arcs, is that dean is more loyal than sam, but shawn is more loyal than jack. so the older brothers duo would have different feelings to each other, and so would the younger brothers duo, rather than being in strong agreement.
bmwnatural concept!!
its set in 1997 (or close, bmw is a bit inconsistent with time and ages of the characters. but i mean bmw season 5).
instead of buying the camping store, amy buys a motel.
eric is about 19 or 20, so is jack, shawn is about 16 or 17, dean is 18, sam is 14.
john drops dean and sam at this motel for a few months, checking in occasionally but pretty rarely.
eric works at the motel, he becomes good friends with dean. shawn is also there pretty often, maybe he works there too, or he just likes hanging out there. he and sam become good friends too.
alan starts to catch on that there’s something not right with sam and dean, realises he almost never sees john. he doesn’t really get a chance to deal with it in any way before they move on.
sam and shawn bond over their dads being bad fathers, at one point though sam crosses a line making fun of chet and they get into a big argument. i hope they’d resolve it before they leave, but supernatural flashback episodes seem to always end with them being unable to resolve conflicts before they’re forced to move on, so who knows.
i think eric and dean’s dynamic would be interesting to explore because while i think they’re very similar characters, i think those similarities arise most in dean when he’s in his 30’s. so maybe dean will learn a little more about himself and that his feelings are okay through eric.
jack would be there sometimes but he doesn’t really fit into being a main character for this storyline i don’t think. maybe dean would catch onto jack and eric’s budding romance, whether consciously or subconsciously, and have some confused feelings about that.
